When we first walked into this restaurant, located on Schwarzenbergstrasse 2 in the 1st, I thought I’d be writing a review of a fun dive bar. The bar was dark, smoky, and had an, uh, interesting “occupied city”/revolution theme. We quickly discovered that upstairs was non-smoking and breathable, though it retained the quirky theme.
This restaurant’s claim to fame is their “self made” unfiltered beer, and rightly so! The highlight of the meal was definitely the beer: my husband enjoyed a wooden cask-aged IPA and I had a Bavarian-style Weisse beer. There is a seasonal beer menu in addition to what’s always on offer, which is reason enough to return. For the non-beer drinkers, the restaurant also has wine, liquors, and the full range of non-alcoholic beverages.
The food was also great. The menu is mostly traditional Viennese fare with a few semi-American dishes (such as buffalo wings and hamburgers) thrown in. The food was all delicious, and the gulasch was one of the best that we’ve had since we’ve been here. My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time to try the dessert and different beers, but we’ll be going back.
Note: Reservations were not required, but I would strongly recommend them. We departed a little after 7:00 on a Sunday night and there was a (short) line of people waiting for a table in the non-smoking section.
