Review: El Patio de Nando

We recently enjoyed a four-course meal at El Patio de Nando, a Mexican restaurant located at Ungargasse 8 in the 3rd district. It was a 5-minute walk from the U4 and U3 stop at “Landstrasse – Wien Mitte.” The dinner was fantastic and we have a new destination for when we crave Mexican food.

When we entered we were greeted by the owner who was very friendly. I get the impression this restaurant is more popular in its Latin dance club/cocktail bar role, as we were one of two people there for dinner and the staff was busy setting up equipment for a live band.

Side note: my children were completely fascinated by the set-up and one of the employees brought them over the drums so they could look at them. The drummer started to drum for them and there was lots of crazy toddler dancing for the rest of our meal. The employees didn’t seem to mind and, in fact, were super friendly to our kids. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my kids back here.

But more importantly, let’s talk food. Our meal started with a plate of nachos: tortilla chips topped with grilled chicken, cheese, honest-to-goodness homemade salsa, and guacamole. It was so delicious that I could have just had another plate of those and called it a night, but there were other delicious things in store for us.

The soup and main came together: the soup was somewhere between a soup and thin chili, and it came with a slice of bread. It was delicious and had just a little bit of heat to it. It was accompanied by an enchilada and more of the fantastic salsa. It wasn’t the type of enchilada you’d get in the States, laying atop a heap of fresh refried beans and smothered in melted cheese (though it did have some cheese on top) and sour cream. It was good, though.

Our dessert was, thankfully, a mango smoothie. I am not sure that I could have eaten anything more after all the other food, and the cool fruit smoothie was refreshing. When the waiter brought the bill, it was accompanied by a shot of tequila for my husband and I. The best part? We had bought a Groupon so the entire four-course meal and tequila cost 20 Euros (we bought meals for the kids, hence the bill). I highly recommend this place, and plan to return there myself.
