Since my 4-year old son has never been a happy fish in the water, I signed him up for an intensive swim class at the gym WorkOut in the 17th district to get him ready for pool season this summer.
Kids ages 4 and up can partake in these classes that are run without the parents present. The classes meet for 50 minutes every week-day for 2 weeks – yes, it’s quite a commitment! Classes consist of no more than 9 children and fill up quickly.
The school has been running for 17 years and based on staff experience, about 90% of children can safely keep themselves above water at the end of the 2 weeks. (Based on my son’s experience and his fellow swimming newbies, I can’t quite vouch for that statistic).
The 2-week course costs 163 Euros (=10 classes) and if children can’t swim independently, parents may sign them up for individual “Nachschwimm” classes at 12 Euros each. If kids still cannot swim independently following 5 of those additional classes, they may enroll for free in another 2-week class….until they can swim by themselves.
Please be aware that this is an indoor pool on the top floor with glass windows from ceiling to floor so during the summer months, it becomes unbearably hot inside. Also note that the changing rooms are very small.
Finally, a note about the gym/swim school location: there is street parking available (need parkpickerl) but a better option is to park in the parking garage of the Hernalser Shopping Center that is about 200m away from the swim school. You can park for free up to 2 hours (make sure to get a parking ticket before you leave the garage).
