Bellevue Alm in Bad Gastein

Located at 1300m above Bad Gastein, the Bellevue Alm is a great place for dinner or Apre Ski.  In winter, the lodge is easily accessed on the ski piste on the way down into the valley.  There is a road you can hike to get up to the lodge for dinner, though snowshoes may be helpful depending on the time of year.  If you prefer the easy route up, you can take the Alm’s private single chairlift to dinner (6.50 Euro round trip / 4 Euro one way) for a spectacular view of the valley at night.  If you are feeling a bit more adventurous after dinner, you can take the rodelbahn down to the valley on the snow covered road.  We could not ride down due to lack of snow, but the lift ride was both beautiful and peaceful.

In the summer, the Bellevue Alm is an easy stop on the way up to or from the Stubnerkogel for both hikers and mountain bikers.

The four of us enjoyed cheese fondue in a very traditional environment.

Sankt Johann im Pongau

Located less than an hour’s drive from Salzburg (about 3 1/2 hour from Vienna) Sankt Johann im Pongau is a fun ski areas for beginners and intermediates.  There may have been more challenging slopes available if we had more snow, but the blue, red and black trails that were open were nice trails.

There are some fun attractions on the mountain: two paid race courses, a free speed measuring course, and on the Wagrain side of the mountain, there was a free race course that recorded your race on video which you could download for free at home.  While not a challenging mountain, the huts were nice and some of the runs with the race activities were a lot of fun.

Great places to eat in the area are:

Oberforsthof Alm was a great restaurant in terms of the food, the service and the atmosphere.  The menu was extensive – like many of the reviewers on Trip Advisor, we were at first nervous about the size of the menu since big menu often equals low quality. Our choices were delicious.  We had two different salads, a mixed salad and the burrata salad. We then shared the Chinoise Fondue which included chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, hot dogs – we weren’t expecting those – vegetables and a variety of sauces. It was all delicious! I would love to go back there again next time we are in the region to try some of there other offerings. A great place to eat after a long day skiing or hiking.

This tiny restaurant is located in the center of St. Johann im Pongau, just across from the cathedral.  There were only 3 tables and then some seats the the bar.  The cuisine is Mediterranean – I enjoyed some baked feta and vegetables, some gambas, and some hummus.  My husband had a salad, the souvlaki, and the apple streudel topped with caramel and whipped cream.  Everything was delicious.  The service was slow but friendly.
